Getting Started
How do I create an account?
Open the app, tap Continue with Apple or Continue with Google, and you are in. We do not ask for a phone number, name, or email.
Which devices does Magmug support?
iPhone running iOS 16 or newer, and Android phones running Android 9 or newer. Tablet support is on the roadmap.
Can I use Magmug on my computer?
Not yet. A web companion is being considered for after the mobile launch stabilizes.
Privacy and Security
How does periodic data deletion work?
You choose a retention window per chat: 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, or never. After the window expires, the messages are permanently deleted from your device and our servers.
Does screenshot blocking work on every phone?
On iOS, screenshots are blocked at the OS level for marked chats. On Android, screenshots are blocked using the FLAG_SECURE flag, which works on most devices but a determined user could bypass it with another camera. We make this clear inside the app.
Can someone report me unfairly?
Reports are reviewed by humans, not bots. A single report from one user does not result in any action. Repeated reports from multiple users trigger a review of the chat content within the retention window.
Features
What is shuffle and is it required?
Shuffle is an optional way to meet new people who are also using shuffle. It is off by default. If you only want to chat with people you already know, you can ignore it forever.
What does premium include?
Premium adds longer retention windows, custom themes, and the ability to send larger files. Every privacy feature is in the free plan.
What is Tas?
Tas is a small in-app currency used for optional features like priority placement in shuffle. It is not required to use Magmug. Most users never buy any.
Account
How do I block someone?
Open the chat, tap the menu in the top corner, and select Block. The other side cannot message you again and cannot tell that they were blocked.
How do I delete my account?
Settings > Account > Delete Account. The deletion is permanent and immediate. Your messages are removed from our servers within 30 days.
How do I cancel premium?
Manage your subscription through the App Store or Google Play, depending on where you bought it. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.
Technical
Does Magmug use end-to-end encryption?
Messages are encrypted in transit using TLS 1.3 and encrypted at rest on our servers. End-to-end encryption is on the roadmap and will be added before the next major version.
How much data does Magmug use?
Text messaging uses very little data. Sending a photo uses roughly the same data as sending an email attachment. Video messages are compressed to keep usage reasonable.
Is Magmug open source?
Parts of the security infrastructure are planned to be opened for public audit before end-to-end encryption ships. The full app is not open source.
